light reading · the bazza/shazza/dazza tradition

Why every Aussie ends up with a nickname

Barry becomes Bazza. Sharon becomes Shazza. McDonald becomes Macca. Australia's love of affectionate shortenings is so strong it shows up in official names — yes, "Maccas" is the restaurant's own branding here. Below: how the patterns work, and what your name would become.

What's your Aussie nickname?

The three Aussie nickname rules

1 The -azza rule

Take the first sound, add -azza. Works best for two-syllable names ending in -y or -on:

  • Barry → Bazza
  • Sharon → Shazza
  • Darren → Dazza
  • Gary → Gazza
  • Murray → Muzza
  • Karen → Kazza

2 The -acca / -as rule for Mc/Mac names

Anyone with a Scottish or Irish "Mc/Mac" prefix becomes just Macca — regardless of their actual surname:

  • McGrath, McMahon, McDonald, McLeod → all just Macca
  • McDonald's the restaurant → Maccas (officially!)

3 The -o suffix rule

Especially for surnames or already-short first names. Strip the last syllable (if there is one) and add -o:

  • John → Johno
  • David → Davo
  • Steve → Steve-o
  • Watson → Watto
  • Robinson → Robbo
